BACKGROUND
The collective started with the question: why don’t visual artists collaborate the way musicians do? Inspired by their time in the London Jazz, Rap and Afrobeats music scenes, a few visual artists decided to form an initiative to challenge this question, under the name MarkMakerz: an ode to the artist’s natural inclination to both work in private, and to make their mark on a wide scale.
The collection’s mission is to bring together multi-talented illustrators from various ethnic, class and disciplinary backgrounds, and to create a culture of sharing knowledge, resources and experience amongst peers as we navigate the creative industry. Having begun our journey with our online daily challenge Playtober, garnering an audience throughout the online art community, and going on to exhibit at Tate Britain in 2023, we hope to expand our reach and develop on our ethos.
Weekly studio meetups
A general catch up, updates on what everyone’s working on, what’s inspired us lately and sharing our experience navigating the creative industries
Art Jams
An opportunity for artists to work alongside peers, picking up on ideas, techniques and influences, and ultimately allowing us to develop our craft with support.
Gallery Shows
Having a network of artists means many gallery shows going on! We encourage a community of support for each artist’s journey, and organise visits to these shows alongside organising our own gallery shows happening in established and local spaces.
Most recently: Tate Britain, 2023.
